New Painting in Progress

It’s funny the things that inspire you to start a painting but this is the first time a frame got me going!  My framer uses moulding leftovers from larger projects to make small-format frames then sells them for a very low price…this one was $10.00!!!  It was love at first sight, which is unusual since I rarely go for dark frames.  Unfortunately a custom order for this same 5×7″ frame is $150.00…yikes!

So I start thinking…dark frame, dark background, bright subject.  Here is the first stage of a 5×7″ acrylic painting of a Great Egret.  I’ve layered many transparent glazes of Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide, Transparent Red Iron Oxide, Green Gold, Jenkins Green and Paynes Gray to get a rich deep dark for the background water and have begun blocking in the basic shapes and values.  I’m working on the painting today so stay tuned for more updates…
